Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Yurembam
When Mary Immaculate Catholic Church is inaugurated on the 15th of January 2021 at Yurembam by Most Rev. Dominic Lumon, Archbishop of Imphal, it will be the first Catholic Church for this particular community. Catholic presence amongst the Inpui community is low in Manipur, though there were few individuals baptized as Catholics in the late 1970s and 1980s. However, the relentless efforts by pioneer Catechists like (L) Timothy Lungguppou, AS. James Wungmatem and Anthony Katalou Riamei in visiting them frequently bore fruit, when in 2012, Mrs. (L) Kh.Rebecca Ingelei was baptized by Fr.Dominic Athishu, the then Parish Priest of St. Paul Parish, Sangaiprou, on her desire to embrace the Catholic faith. Her decision sparked the ember, and the light to Christ eventually got lit. Today, the community has nine Catholic families, with 33 members. The credit for enabling the Inpuis to have a Church of their own must therefore go to those pioneer Catechists as well as to young Catechists like Simon Dangmei and priests who have been frequenting them in prayers.
